캐나다인이 이순신 장군에 대해 쓴 글 본문

저의 이름은 챈탈 뒤벡이며 41살이고
프랑스계 캐나다인으로
현재는 미국에서 남편과 강아지 딸과 살고 있습니다.
제가 이 위대한 장군에 대해 처음 알게 된 것은
제가 사는 지역에서
2005년부터 공중 TV로 방영되기 시작한
“불멸의 이순신”을 통해서입니다.
저는 즉시 이 분에 대해 “경이감”을 느끼게 되었습니다.
방송 초반부터
이렇게 청렴하고 정직하며 용감한 분에 대해
더 많은 것을 알고 싶었습니다.
그래서 그의 일기와 임진장초
그리고 영의정 유성룡의 징비록도 주문해서 보았습니다.
그리고 임진왜란에 관한 것도
찾을 수 있는 것은 다 찾아 보았고요.
책을 읽고, 그리고 드라마를 보고,
저는 정말 가슴이 벅찼습니다.
그의 어린 시절부터 그의 가족들의 삶,
그가 견뎌내야 했던 모든 고난과 불공평,
그의 인내,
애국심,
백성과 조정에 대한 믿음.
그가 쓴 모든 문장을 통해 느껴지는
그의 지성과 도덕성,
그의 부하들을 위한 공평한 처우와 배려,
그리고 인생의 모든 행보에서 보여준
다른 이들에 대한 존경심.
그와 만났던 사람, 그를 알게 된 사람,
그리고 그와 함께 일했던 사람들은
정말 축복받은 사람들입니다.
그러나 물론 그의 동시대인들 중에는
관리들과 심지어 왕까지도
그에 대해 시기하고 질투하기도 했지요.
이런 모든 비바람을
그런 악조건 속에서,
그런 놀라운 신념으로,
그의 부하들과 훌륭한 거북선의 도움으로
숭고하게 이겨낸 그는
얼마나 위대한 분인지요.
그는 조국을 지킬 수 있었고,
세계 곳곳의 많은 이들의 마음과 가슴에
오늘도 살아있습니다.
저도 그 한 사람으로서
그를 알게 된 것이 기쁩니다.
그는 제 삶을 바꾸었고,
저 자신이 조금 더 나아진 것 같습니다.
이순신 장군이 오늘날의 세태를 어떻게 생각할까요?
그리고 오늘날의 지도자들을 어떻게 생각할까요?
그는 아마 별로 변한 것이 없다고 생각할 테지요.
나는 그가 물 기슭에 서서
깊은 생각을 하고 있는 것을 상상해봅니다.
슬프기도 하고, 그리고 동시에
아직 바뀌어야 할 것이 많긴 하지만
그의 조국이 지금까지 이룩한 것들을 보며
매우 자랑스럽게 여기겠지요.
저는 (물론 저의 꿈이지만)
그런 분이 머무르고 있는 곳에
제가 감히 갈 수 있는 자격이 혹시 있다면,
그 분을 만나보고 싶습니다.

My thoughts about Admiral Yi
Regards,
My name is Chantal DuBeck and I am a 41 years old
French Canadian woman living in the US
with my husband and doggie daughter.
I first found out about the Great Admiral
when the series the "Immortal Lee Soon-shin"
started on public television in my area in 2005.
Right away I was in "awe" of this man.
From the start of the series,
I wanted to find out more about a person of such integrity,
honesty and courage.
I ordered his journal and his memorials to the court
as well as minister Yu Sung-ryong's Book of Corrections.
I also read all I could on the Imjin war.
After my reads (and watching the series),
I was so moved! From his early age and his family's life
; all the hardships and unfairness he had to endure,
his perseverance , love of his country, faith
in the people and the court.
His intellect, integrity that comes through every sentence he wrote,
his kindness and fairness to his men
and his respect of others of all walks of life.
Everyone that came in contact with him and got to know
and work with him were so blessed.
But of course there was so much envy and jealousy
in some of his contemporaries and from the ministers
and even the King himself!
What a great man to have weathered all this with such grace,
under such odds, with the amazing faith he had,
with the help of his men and the wonderful turtle ship.
He was able to save his country and he lives on today
in the mind and hearts of so many people around the world.
I, for on-e, am so glad I got to know about him .
He changed my life and I am the better for it.
What would Admiral Yi think of
the state of today's world? Its leaders?
He probably would think that nothing changed much.
I imagine him standing at the water's edge in deep thought,
mostly being sad, and at the same time so proud of his country
and how far they have come and accomplished even t
hough there is much to change still.
I hope that (as my beliefs allow me),
to meet him on-e day if I even get
to be worthy enough to reach the kind of place
where such a man might reside.
